This year was already way cool - it's our 30th year, we've got an AWESOME director who's doing great things with the band, we've got some fun music, past directors coming back to direct songs, and our numbers are over 500 again!

Then it just got cranked up to 11!

First the Mayor proclaimed June 7th 2014 will be known as "One More Time Around Again Marching Band Day!"  That's pretty cool!

Then they blew us away and the Rose Festival President announced, "The One More Time Around Again Marching Band will be the 2014 Rose Festival Grand Marshal!!!!!"  GRAND! FREAKING! MARSHAL!!!  First time a band has EVER had this honor!

HUGE thanks to the people watching us marching down the street.  We do this because it makes us feel amazing when we see you smiling, dancing and enjoying our crazy fun.  Without you we wouldn't be around.  :)

Here's to 30+ more!!!

Welcome Interim Director Al Kato!

This year our director is someone who has been marching in the band.  He knows our spirit and we are very happy to have him directing us!  Here's his welcome letter followed by a short bio.

Welcome letter from Al Kato

Greetings 2014 Band Members,

It is a great honor to be recommended and appointed as your director for this 30th Anniversary marching season.  I am humbled by the support and gentle persuasiveness of the board, showing faith in me to lead the band this season.

There has been so much positive flow in the direction the band has taken in the twelve years I have been marching with you.  I am up for the great things ahead, and I trust you are too.

This is by no means a one-man operation, and there is a long list of people on the board and staff and volunteers who are ready to make this year a rousing success.  I am grateful for the many people in the band who have pitched in in the past and are ready to go the distance in the future (cue Disney’s Hercules soundtrack).  I will do my best to make sure we have a successful season, one which the Portland Rose Festival Association is going beyond the call of duty to support our Anniversary season.

With all this going for us, we can’t lose.  Please keep up your positive energy, and enjoy the fun and fulfillment that comes with being a part of this awesome organization.

Attached is the revised list of music for our May 17th concert and 3 parades.  As you can see, it is a year of highlights, and I hope your experience this year is a highlight of your band life.  Music should be available to print from the OMTAAMB website before next Monday.

Thanks for your support and let’s have a great year!

Al Kato, Interim Music Director
One More Time Around Again Marching Band (OMTAAMB-PDX)

When asked what brought you to the OMTAAMB twelve short years ago, Al replied, “I was invited to join our trumpet ranks.”  Obviously Al really enjoyed himself, because twelve (12) years later he’s still with us and is about to take over leading this ominously sized group of experienced musicians.

What keeps Al coming back to the OMTAAMB year after year?  He says, “Because I love to hang out with my friends and really enjoy playing music with them.”

Currently Al educates the next generations of musicians as Portland’s Jesuit High School Band Director.  He is very well respected throughout the music community as not only a musician, but a leader and director.  He is wonderful at directing the young as well as the young at heart.

Al received his music and teaching education at the Oregon College of Education where he graduated with the Class of 1981.  Prior to that, Al attended Clackamas High School, Class of 1977 along with other OMTAAMB members.  Al is a true local boy who has made it to the big time in his profession and personal passion.

Al is no stranger to the OMTAAMB.  He has played trumpet under the direction of our past two music directors.  He is an active Board Member who has brilliantly worked to recruit new members throughout the band family.

The membership of the OMTAAMB is excited to have this enthusiastic, energetic, and highly competent new director!

OMTAAMB Helps Out Girl Scouts

In 2013, the OMTAAMB had several boxes of old band shirts that we needed to get rid of.  Jill Pex (one of our bell players) offered to take them off our hands.  She gave them to the Girl Scouts at their summer camp.  They were VERY happy with them and gave us this wonderful thank you card!  Thanks Girl Scouts, happy to help!
